The Chapora Fort is one of the must-sees in Goa. The fort is an important display of the Portugese history and culture. However the Chapora Fort is almost demolished now leaving only history associated with it. This famous red-laterite fort was built in 1617 by the Portugese. The fort was initially constructed with the purpose of a border watch but now it attracts a large number of tourists visiting Goa.

The Chapora Fort was deserted in 1892 by the Portugese and has been ruined with time. However the 2 tunnels are still persistent that used to be the supply routes for the defenders. The top of the fort also provides a breath taking view of the neighbouring Anjuna and Vagator beaches. The Chapora Fort had been conquered many times by different Hindu rulers over time. In 1864 the Maratha Ruler Sambhaji defeated the Portugese and captured the fort. However the Portugese took over again after a few years. the fort was again rebuilt with underground tunnels which provided a way to escape in case of emergency. The Marathas again captured the fort of Chapora. The Portugese again succeeded to recapture the fort again after 2 years.
The fort derived its name from the Chapora River. The Portugese completely abandon the fort in 1892 and is almost ruined now. However you can still get the essence of history that is still associated with it.
How to reach the Chapora Fort: there are plenty of bus services between Mapusa to Anjuna and Vagator with stoppage at the Chapora Fort. Many hotels in Goa also arrange for trips to the Chapora Fort on prior request.
