Divar Island

The Divar Island, located about 10 kilometers from Panjim, is one of the popular tourist destinations in Goa. The island can be reached by ferry. The ferry service is quite frequent and you will get regular ferry service to reach the Divar Island. However it is a bit risky to get to the Divar Island in the monsoon months. The nearby village is the Piedade village. You will have to pass through the wooded hills and cross roads amidst paddy field before reaching the Piedade village.

The small village is also marked by the church of Lady of Compassion on the top of the hills. The village will also take you to the time of the Portuguese. History still lingers on with the Portugese villas in this magnificent countryside. The top of the hill will also give you the majestic view of the surrounding neighbouring areas. Glimpse of the Old Goa and the meandering River Mandovi can be also seen from the hill top.

You can also reach Divar Island from Panaji by launch services. The nearest railway station is in the village of Karmali. The drive to the village at the Divar Island gives the glimpse of typical rural life of Goa. The Divar Island is beautifully bordered with the scenic hills and the paddy field.

If you visit the Divar Island during the monsoon, you can also take part in the famous Bonderam festival, a traditional festival at the island. This festival is particularly held during the fourth Saturday of the month of August. The festival is held as a memoir to the dispute and the fury of the the locals over the Portugese of resolving disputes. A large number of tourists and local people accumulate to the island at this time.
